What is net worth?
Defining the Basics
At its core, net worth is a financial metric representing the difference between an individual’s assets and liabilities. In simpler terms,( balance sheet financial advisor credit card debt calculate your net worth United States retirement accounts auto loan high net worth individuals loans credit card balance financial health bank account positive net worth personal finance student loans assets and liabilities negative net worth net worth is essential net worth statement ) it’s the value of what you own minus what you owe. This section breaks down the fundamental elements constituting net worth, laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding.
Your net worth is your total wealth, considering all your assets and liabilities.
How do you figure out your net worth? It’s a simple equation. Add up the value of all your assets, subtract your debts and liabilities, and the result is your net worth.
Student loans, car loans, credit card debt, high mortgages, and medical bills hurt your net worth. Owe too much, and your net worth can go negative. Let’s look at some examples.
Example of net worth
John took out a loan to purchase his car and owes $15,000. His student loans total $40,000. His credit card debt balance is $12,000. John rents his apartment and has not invested in a 401(k), does not have savings, and doesn’t own anything of value. With $0 in assets and $67,000 in debt, John’s net worth is negative-$67,000.
James also took out a loan to purchase his car and owes $15,000. But he’s paid his student loans down and owes only $20,000. And James pays his credit cards off each month, so they do not carry debt. Like John, James rents. But he’s invested $35,000 in his company’s 401(k) and shares of stock valued at $75,000. James’ assets equal $110,000, and his debts total $35,000. So James’ net worth is $75,000.
If John or James owned a home, the mortgage would be a liability, but the home’s value would be an asset. Whatever is left over if they sell their house and pay off the mortgage would be part of their net worth.

2.
Stick to your budget: It’s easier to increase your net worth if you spend as much or more than you make every month. Create a budget using various budgeting apps or a simple spreadsheet and stick to your plan.
3.
Invest diligently: Investing is one of the best ways to grow your wealth, thanks to the power of compound interest. So, start investing regularly and stick with this habit. You can use robo-advisors like Betterment, an online broker, or even microsaving apps.

Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez was known for her starring role on the 2007–12 Disney television series Wizards of Waverly Place and as the singer of such pop hit songs as “Come & Get It” and “Same Old Love.”
Selena Gomez, who grew up in a suburb of Dallas, began her acting career in 2002 as a child on the PBS children’s TV series Barney & Friends. She began her music career on Disney projects, including singing the theme song for Wizards of Waverly Place, in which she also starred.
Her parents divorced when she was a small child, and she was raised by her mother. Selena Gomez had romantic relationships with Justin Bieber and, more briefly, with The Weeknd.
Selena Gomez (born July 22, 1992, Grand Prairie, Texas, U.S.) American actress and singer who won legions of young fans as the winsome star of the Disney television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–12) and as a pop vocalist.
Gomez, who was named after the popular Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was raised in suburban Dallas. Inspired by her mother, an amateur actress, Gomez tried out for a role on the PBS children’s television series Barney & Friends and, as a result, appeared regularly on the program in 2002–04. After making her big-screen debut in the family movie Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), she auditioned for the Disney Channel, which eventually led to a guest spot on the TV series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In 2007 Gomez was cast as Alex Russo, a mischievous tomboy with magical powers, on a new Disney sitcom, Wizards of Waverly Place. The show, for which she also sang the theme song, became an instant hit among the preteen set, and she earned favourable comparisons to the channel’s leading ingenue, Miley Cyrus.
While continuing to star in Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez acted in various tween-oriented videos and TV movies and provided a voice for the animated feature Horton Hears a Who! (2008). She then landed lead roles in the theatrical film Ramona and Beezus (2010), which was based on a children’s novel by Beverly Cleary, and the romantic comedy Monte Carlo (2011). Gomez departed from her family-friendly image with a role as a college student seeking adventure in Florida in the lurid Spring Breakers (2012). She then portrayed the girlfriend of a college student who is killed in a shooting on campus in the drama Rudderless (2014) and a sorority sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016). Gomez also voiced a character in the animated Hotel Transylvania (2012) and its sequels (2015, 2018) as well as Dolittle (2020). In 2019 she appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s zombie movie The Dead Don’t Die and in Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York. She returned to TV for Only Murders in the Building (2021– ), in which she costarred with Steve Martin and Martin Short as an unlikely crime-solving trio.
Gomez ventured into music as the front woman of Selena Gomez & the Scene, an electronic-influenced pop band that produced several dance hits. The group released the albums Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011) before announcing its separation in 2012. Gomez then forged a solo career with Stars Dance (2013), which featured the seductive single “Come & Get It.” Subsequent solo albums included Revival (2015) and Rare (2020), the latter of which yielded the hit ballad “Lose You to Love Me.”
As Gomez transitioned into adulthood, her fame was undoubtedly magnified by a romantic relationship with pop singer Justin Bieber. She was also known for her philanthropic work, much of it accomplished through UNICEF, which in 2009 appointed her a goodwill ambassador. In 2015 Gomez revealed that she had been diagnosed with lupus. As a result of complications from the disease, she had a kidney transplant in 2017. During this time Gomez was also candid about her struggles with depression and anxiety, and in 2020 she revealed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me (2022), she discussed her mental health and her struggles with fame.
singing
Singing, the production of musical tones by means of the human voice. In its physical aspect, singing has a well-defined technique that depends on the use of the lungs, which act as an air supply, or bellows; on the larynx, which acts as a reed or vibrator; on the chest and head cavities, which have the function of an amplifier, as the tube in a wind instrument; and on the tongue, which together with the palate, teeth, and lips articulate and impose consonants and vowels on the amplified sound. Though these four mechanisms function independently, they are nevertheless coordinated in the establishment of a vocal technique and are made to interact upon one another.
Singing versus speaking
Singing is distinguished from speaking by the manner in which the breath is expended to vibrate the vocal cords. Singing requires more breath the louder, higher, and longer one sings. It also requires that the emission of breath be more firmly controlled. A pertinent analogy is the function of the instrumentalist’s breath in playing a reed instrument—e.g., a clarinet, an oboe, or a saxophone. The technique of singing depends ultimately on the coordination of the various anatomical mechanisms in order to produce a propulsion of sound in a steady flow. A further distinction between singing and speaking is the control that is required, in singing, of the movement and reflexes of the larynx. As one sings higher, the larynx tends to rise sympathetically and at a certain point becomes an interference causing the voice to break, or crack. Not much movement of the larynx occurs within a singer’s normal range, which is usually about an octave and a third. Beyond that range, either above or below, an element of technical accomplishment sets the professional off from the unschooled amateur.
A film, also called a movie or a motion picture, is a series of still photographs on film projected onto a screen using light in rapid succession. The optical phenomenon known as persistence of vision gives the illusion of actual, smooth, and continuous movement.
Films can be classified as documentaries, experimental films, animated films, and fictional genres such as westerns, comedies, thrillers, and musicals, among many others.

Some of the major awards given for films are the Academy Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards, and the Césars.

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco can’t catch a break.
Gomez has been defending her romance with the 35-year-old music producer and food critic since confirming their relationship in early December. After secretly dating her former collaborator and fellow foodie for six months, Gomez told wary fans that he’s “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
While some haters have shared some rude opinions that don’t bear repeating, others were concerned about the coupling for more valid reasons. For one, many believe a statement Blanco made in 2020 was a disrespectful jab at Gomez. While promoting the Justin Bieber song “Lonely” on the Zach Sang Show, Blanco said, “Justin is not one of those, like, cookie-cutter pop artists; you know they’re, like, ‘This is my new single and here’s my makeup line.’”
When a fan pointed out this apparent “shade” to Gomez, a pop star who owns a makeup company, the 31-year-old replied, “Yeah and he’s still better than anyone I’ve ever been with. Facts.”
All this is to say, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s relationship is definitely under a microscope—and naysayers have already found something else to critique.
On January 3 they went on their first public outing as a couple, appearing very happy and cozy at a Lakers game in Los Angeles. However, many social media users were distracted from the sweet courtside moment by a photo of Blanco sitting with his bare feet removed from his white Birkenstock clogs.
“Having your dogs out on the sideline is wild behavior,” one user wrote in the comments a GQ Sports Instagram post, while another suggested that “toes out for a dude court side should be a lifetime ban.” One commenter even described the move as “diabolical.”
Still, plenty of Instagram users came to their defense. “Everyone’s hating but they both look genuinely happy and I’m happy for them,” a GQ Sports follower wrote. “Stop looking at his dawgs everyone.”
If it helps, it appears that Blanco’s feet were out of his clogs for just a short moment in time. In every other Getty photo that extends beyond the knees, his shoes remain firmly in place.

What is Selena Gomez’s Net Worth and Salary?
Selena Gomez is an American singer, actress, producer, songwriter and social media mega-star who has a net worth of $800 million. As we detail in the next section of this article, the vast majority of Selena Gomez’s net worth comes thanks to her highly-successful makeup company, Rare Beauty.
Selena Gomez began her career as a child actress on shows like Barney & Friends and has since gone on to become one of the biggest stars in the world. Selena Gomez has managed to remain relatively drama-free in comparison to some of her Disney starlet counterparts. Unlike Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, Britney Spears, and Demi Lovato, Ms. Gomez has seemed to handle fame, a busy schedule, a high-profile romance with Justin Bieber, and all-things Disney, with a surprising amount of equanimity.
The singer/actor/dancer began acting professionally at age 7 on “Barney & Friends”, and then began working for the Disney Channel in a recurring role on Seasons 2 and 3 of “Hannah Montana”. In 2007, she was cast as one of the leads on the popular series, “Wizards of Waverly Place”. From there, she went on to appear in such films as, “Another Cinderella Story”, “Princess Protection Program”, and “Ramona and Beezus”. Today she is a highly-sought-after actress and endorser. In 2021 Selena began starring in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.
She also launched a successful music career, and has released three studio albums as part of Selena Gomez & The Scene. All three albums have achieved Gold status.
Selena Gomez is one of the most-popular figures on social media and therefore one of the highest-paid endorsers in the world. As of this writing she has more than 58 million followers on TikTok and more than 420 million followers on Instagram, becoming the first woman to hit the 400 million benchmark on the platform. Her YouTube channel has more than 33 million subscribers and has generated nearly 13 billion views.
When she is not recording, performing, shooting a project, or rehearsing, she is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Gomez became an owner and investor in the ice cream brand Serendipity. In September she launched the makeup line “Rare Beauty.” She also co-founded the mental health platform “Wondermind” and is an investor in food delivery company Gopuff.
Rare Beauty & Other Investments
Outside of her acting and singing career, Selena is a highly-successful investor and entrepreneur.
In 2020 she became an investor and co-owner of the ice cream brand Serendipity.
Selena is the co-founder of a mental health startup called Wondermind. In August 2022 Wondermind raised $5 million at a $100 million valuation. Serena Williams’ venture fund, Serena Ventures, led the round alongside Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital. Wonderkind, which positions itself as a “mental fitness” company, produces social media channels, web content, a newsletter, a podcast and more.
Most importantly for Selena’s net worth, she is the founder of makeup company Rare Beauty. Selena launched Rare Beauty in September 2020 with an exclusive drop at Sephora. Rare Beauty has been an enormous success. In 2022 the company generated at least $100 million in revenue. It is reportedly on pace to generate $300 million, or more, in 2023. Using a conservative 4x revenue multiple and assuming $300 million is accurate, Rare Beauty is worth at least $1.2 billion today.
Rare Beauty has found success by focusing on moderately-priced, accessible and easy-to-use products such as lip liner, liquid blush and liquid foundation. Most products cost between $5 and $30.
Rare Beauty donates 1% of all sales to its own philanthropic fund. To date the fund has already raised over $5 million including from donor events.

Adam Petrick, Global Director for Brand and Marketing for PUMA said the following, “Selena is authentic, creative, talented, and fearlessly real. She is everything that today’s female consumer is looking for in a role model … In recent days, she has demonstrated just how strong she truly is. With her honesty and openness about living with Lupus, she has provided an incredible example of confidence, poise, and determination for all of us. Selena is a perfect partner for PUMA because she is not afraid of the challenges our world can offer; she fights and perseveres, which is exactly what PUMA is all about. She will not only represent our brand, but she will help to define and enhance our women’s business.”
Gomez’s first appearance for Puma will be in the brand’s latest campaign for the Phenom, one of Puma’s latest women’s footwear lines.
$10 Million Coach Deal
In December 2016 she signed a $10 million endorsement deal with bag maker, Coach. At the time, Selena was 24 years old. Not only did she become the new face of the brand, but the deal allowed for Gomez to create her own line for Coach, which had been looking to broaden their customer. The brand hoped that Gomez, who at the time was the most followed person on Instagram, would help bring in younger customers, all while staying in tune with their mature customer base.
Stuart Vevers, the creative director of Coach, says that the entire brand is looking towards a “new day at Coach.” In an interview with British Vogue, he said the following: “When I first joined, I used our history as a touchstone, so it was for me to discover the things that would be believable at Coach … I felt it was important to be bold and look forward and explore what the next generation want from luxury and fashion.”
As a result, the 75-year-old brand, which is looked at as a “heritage” brand for older people by some, has been making a concerted effort to speak to a younger audience. At Coach’s recent 75th anniversary celebration, a number of young stars made appearances, such as Michael B. Jordan, Diplo, and Zoë Kravitz. Coach hopes to parlay this young star power in the form of a new generation of Coach customers. The Gomez signing is yet another step in that direction.
Earnings from Instagram
For many years Selena was the most-followed person on Instagram. Today she has over 420 million followers.
It has been estimated that the value of a single Instagram post from Selena is worth $3.5 million to the brand paying for the post. She has been known to earn anywhere from $500,000 to $800,000 for a single sponsored post. Between her various endeavors, primarily Coach, Puma and Instagram, Selena makes $10-15 million per year. A very very impressive amount, but not quite enough to make her one of the 100 highest-paid celebrities in the world. Perhaps Ms. Gomez prefers to stay low key.
Personal Life
In 2008, Selena briefly dated Nick Jonas. Selena is also notable for having a controversial on-again-off-again relationship with fellow pop-star, Justin Bieber. Their relationship was reportedly so stressful to Selena that she was forced to enter a rehabilitation facility. The two dated seriously for two years from December 2010 to November 2012, then broke up, then got back together again. They repeated this cycle in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. They are reported to have broken up for good in March 2018. Gomez dated The Weeknd seriously from January 2017-October 2017. The Weeknd’s album My Dear Melancholy, released in Mach 2018, makes several references to Gomez
Selena Gomez has referred to Taylor Swift as her “only” friend in the industry.
In December 2023 Selena revealed she was dating producer Benny Blanco.
Philanthropy
Selena is a very active philanthropist who volunteers many hours for a wide variety of causes. She works closely with UNICEF and is currently the organization’s ambassador to the trick-or-treat fundraising program. Gomez traveled to Ghana for a week in 2009 to witness first-hand the grave conditions of impoverished children who lacked necessities like clean water and nourishment. She used her star power through UNICEF to bring awareness to Ghana. She also traveled to Chile to meet the families of UNICEF’s Porgrama Puente program which helps families develop the skills issued to raising children.
Gomez is the ambassador of Do.Something.org and is also involved with the charity RAISE Hope for Congo. In 2012, she was named ambassador of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. She is known for making frequent appearances at children’s hospitals. Selena also worked as a spokesperson for State Farm Insurance and appeared in several commercials that aired on Disney with the goal of raising awareness of safe driving.
Health Issues
Selena was diagnosed with Lupus in 2014. She received a kidney transplant from friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa (of The Secret Life of the American Teenager fame) in September 2017. In April 2020, it was revealed that Selena was diagnosed with Biopolar Disorder. In November 2022, she announced she had an episode of psychosis back in 2018.
Selena Gomez Net Worth Milestones
Selena was added to CelebrityNetWorth in December 2009 with a net worth of $1 million. At the time she was 17 years old and was earning $30,000 per episode of Wizards of Waverly Place. She earned just over $3 million for her work on Wizards. By 2011 her net worth topped $5 million. She broke $10 million in net worth in April 2013 after releasing her debut solo album. She topped $18 million in 2015 thanks largely to Instagram. Thanks to the Puma deal, Coach deal, album sales, countless singles, acting career and more, her net worth topped $60 million in mid-2018. As of 2019, Selena Gomez’ net worth was $75 million.
Real Estate
Selena has owned a number of homes throughout the years.
In July 2011, Selena paid $2.175 million for a home in Tarzana, California. The 4,500 square foot home sits on an acre of land and was previously owned by rising star, Jonah Hill. It is one story, and has five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The home features a large eat-in kitchen, an office space, high ceilings, lots of sunlight, and beautiful hardwood floors. There is a spa in the backyard, along with a pool, a tennis court, and a bocce ball court. She listed this home for sale in May 2014 for $3.495 million, ultimately selling it for $3.45 million in October of 2014.
In 2014 she paid $3.69 million to acquire a large house on 3.15 acres in a Calabasas gated community. She at one point tried to sell this house for $4.495 million but ultimately took a small loss. The buyer was rapper French Montana who listed the home in February 2020 for $6.6 million. Here is a video tour of that home:
In 2015 she spent an un-recorded amount to buy a very large home in Fort Worth, Texas. She listed that house for $3.499 million in 2016 and 2017 and then listed again in 2018 for $2.999 million. She sold this property in October 2020 for $2.4 million.
In 2017 she spent $2.249 million to acquire a relatively-modest (for someone with her wealth) home in Studio City, California. She listed it for sale a year later for $2.799 million, and it sold for $2.3 million.
In April 2020, Selena paid $4.9 million for an 11,500 square-foot home in Encino, California. Tom Petty custom built the home in the late 1980s and then gave it over to his ex-wife when they divorced in 1996. Tom’s ex-wife lost the home to foreclosure in 2015. Selena purchased the home from a non-celebrity who owned it for less than a year and made a $400,000 profit on the sale

Prior to her retirement at the US Open last year, Serena Williams made a notable investment of $5 million in the start-up ‘Wondermind’, led by pop singer and actress Selena Gomez.
Wondermind aims to raise awareness about mental health, depression, and addiction issues. Almost a year after Serena Williams‘ investment in the start-up, Gomez‘s net worth has reportedly skyrocketed to an impressive $800 million. This remarkable increase has captured the attention of social media users.
Serena Williams‘ $5 million investment in August 2022 boosted Wondermind’s valuation to $100 million. Besides investing, Williams also pledged her involvement in the start-up’s creative and brand promotion endeavors. In contrast, Selena Gomez‘s net worth was estimated to be around $95 million last year.
However, recent reports indicate a significant surge in Gomez‘s net worth, now standing at approximately $800 million. This astonishing leap has left many fans on Twitter amazed and bewildered.
“How did she make all that money tho,” a user wondered.
Another added: “Find $800 MIL hard to believe, especially up from $95 MIL. Unless she sold a company or something. I don’t know if she owns her masters but selling her catalogue wouldn’t be that much.”
